Altadore
WHERE IT'S LOCATED
Altadore is located in Calgary’s southwest quadrant, just south of Marda Loop and west of River Park. It is bordered by Crowchild Trail to the west, which provides quick access when heading out of down, and it is a 10-minute drive to downtown.
How to get there
By car the community is easily accessed from Crowchild Trail at both 33 Avenue and 50 Avenue Southwest and from 14 Street Southwest. Altadore can also be easily accessed by bus.
Why we like it
Just south of 33 Avenue, Altadore inhabits the Southern half of the vibrant Marda Loop entertainment district – the community is just steps away from numerous restaurants and shops. Schools for K-12 students can be found within walking distance and Mount Royal University lies on the community’s Southwest corner.
Altadore’s proximity to Elbow River Park and Sandy Beach provides an idyllic retreat from the inner-city bustle.
Killarney / Glengarry
WHERE IT'S LOCATED
Killarney lies between 17 Avenue Southwest and Richmond Road, with 37 Street bordering it on the west and 25a Street bordering it on the east.
How to get there
By car, Killarney/Glengarry can be accessed from downtown via 17 Avenue Southwest and from Crowchild trail via the 17 Avenue exit. The community can also be easily accessed by bus or by C-Train via the West LRT line.
Why we like it
Just blocks from the popular 17 Avenue retail and entertainment district, Killarney provides a nice balance between the calm of suburban life and the bustle of the inner city. Killarney has plenty of options for K-12 schools, with Mount Royal University nearby. The Shaganappi Golf Course is minutes away, as is the Bow River Pathway – perfect for cycling and running.
Lakeview
WHERE IT'S LOCATION
Lakeview Village is located on the north end of the Glenmore Reservoir and lies between Glenmore Trail and Crowchild trail in the city’s southwest. The western edge of Lakeview lies on Calgary’s city limits, with the Tsuu T’ina Nation bordering the community.
How to get there
Crowchild Trail provides the main point of access to the community from the north, with Glenmore Trail providing access from the south and east.
Why we like it
There are plenty of local amenities in the neighbourhood, but the Glenmore Reservoir provides the greatest benefit to living in Lakeview. With miles of forested pathways, the reservoir offers a calming refuge from city living, but the community is still a short drive to the city centre. The Grey eagle Resort and Casino lies just west of Lakeview, and the community’s proximity to two of Calgary’s major arteries – Glenmore Trail and Crowchild Trail – provide quick access to the mountains.
Richmond
WHERE IT'S LOCATED
Richmond is located on either side of Crowchild Trail, between 17 Avenue Southwest and 33 Avenue Southwest. It lies immediately west of Marda Loop.
How to get there
From downtown, the community can be accessed via 17 Avenue Southwest, and from Crowchild Trail via the 17 Avenue exit or the 33 Avenue exit.
Why we like it
Also known as Knob Hill, Richmond is home to the Richmond Green Golf Course and the Calgary Arts Academy. It is within walking distance of Marda Loop – the cultural hub for Calgary’s southwest filled with cafes, restaurants, shops and fitness centres. The community flanks Crowchild trail giving its residents easy access to Calgary’s north and south communities, and 17 Avenue provides a short commute to downtown Calgary.
West Hillhurst
WHERE IT'S LOCATED
The first Northwest community on our list, West Hillhurst is located just north and west of Calgary’s downtown core. It is bound in the south by Memorial Drive and the Bow River, and the community flanks both the east and west sides of Crowchild Trail.
How to get there
West Hillhurst can be accessed via Crowchild Trail and, from downtown, via Memorial Drive.
Why we like it
West Hillhurst is home to tree-lined streets that give small-town charm to the convenience of the community’s inner-city lifestyle. The vibrant neighbourhood of Kensington is a short distance away on foot, and the proximity to the Bow River makes the community popular with cyclists and runners – many of whom bike or walk the short distance to downtown for work. The neighbourhood is just down the hill from the University of Calgary and SAIT, McMahon Stadium, and the Jubilee Auditorium.
South Calgary
WHERE IT'S LOCATED
South Calgary is located between 14 Street Southwest, which provides quick access by car or transit to downtown, and Crowchild Trail which connects the community to the North and South regions of the city. Altadore lies immediately north 33 Avenue, and it comprises the Southern half of the Marda Loop entertainment district.
How to get there
By car, South Calgary is easily accessed from Crowchild Trail at 33 Avenue Southwest and from 14 Street Southwest, and the neighbourhood provides and easy commute by bus.
Why we like it
Much like Altadore, South Calgary benefits from its proximity to Marda Loop giving the neighbourhood a vibrant arts and retail culture. The area is incredibly walkable, and there are plenty of options for public and catholic schools.
